3 Tips on How to Talk to Your Kids About Weed

We’ve seen a lot of changes in our lifetime when it came to cannabis.

If you were born before 1996, chances are, you remember when cannabis was illegal (both medically and recreationally) in California.

That all changed with Prop 215 when medicinal cannabis was legalized for patients with a doctor’s recommendation.

Then when Prop 64 passed in 2016, recreational cannabis was finally legal, and you saw dispensaries (like ours) open our doors not just to medical patients, but to anyone 21+.

In just a span of a few years, society flipped its script on cannabis from being a dangerous drug to being a nearly harmless substance with countless scientifically proven medicinal benefits.

But where does that leave our conversations with our kids? How do we talk to our kids about something that they’ll grow up with in a completely different way than we did? Here are just a few tips on how to talk to your kids about weed.

1. Go into it feeling confident about your own cannabis knowledge.

Your little ones will probably have a lot of questions.

So it’s best that you’re prepared to answer them in a way that makes sense for you, and in a way that will help them shape their own view of cannabis.

Especially if you plan on using cannabis in front of them (you wouldn’t hide a glass of wine from your kids, so why would you hide a joint?), it’s important to be well-versed in the different ways of consumption and each of their “side effects”. If you have any specific questions about cannabis before talking with your kids about it, feel free to come in and talk to our knowledgeable and friendly budtenders.

2. Make it clear that it’s something for grown-ups, but be chill about it.

What we mean by this is, depending on the age of your child, not talking about cannabis or simply locking it up and hiding it may have a bit of a “forbidden fruit” effect on your kid.

That’s why it’s so important to be open about any questions they may have and to be clear that cannabis is for adults and they can decide once they’re grown up whether they want to try some or not.

3. Know that it’s normal for parents to use cannabis, and it’s okay to talk to your kids about it.
